THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD
America spent billions of dollars in its war in Vietnam. It sent thousands of young men there only to die. It was finally the power of the press that persuaded the government to call off the war and recall its troops. Here we have a powerful example of how the power of the pen is greater than that of governments and administrations.
The newspaper is a means of keeping in check the foolish ventures of governing bodies. It is at times the only weapon that the common man has in a democracy. In France, during the French revolution, writers and thinkers were known as the Fourth Estate. They had the power to mould public opinion. Even today, when a crime or an injustice is mentioned in the newspapers, governments and authorities come under pressure instead of turning a blind eye to the matter. This clearly shows that the pen has more power today than the sword.
Last but not the least; I thank all my friends for being such a wonderful audience.
